July, 2010:  Mianus River Cleanup
On July 10th, we are hosting a River Clean-Up Day (9am to 1pm).  We are
seeking ten teams of 5 to 10 volunteers to patrol and pick up garbage along the
banks of the River from the Connecticut border on Bedford Banksville Road to
Millers Mill Road in Bedford.  Each team will be assigned a 1/2 mile portion of the
River.  All we need is able bodies to don their work gloves and boots to help us
keep the river green and clean!  If you can join us, or if you know a group who
might like to participate in this community service project, please call Executive
Director Rod Christie, (914) 234-3455.

November, 2009:  MRGP applies for Accreditation!
The land trust accreditation program recognizes land conservation organizations
that meet national quality standards for protecting important natural places and
working lands forever. The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent
program of the Land Trust Alliance, conducts an extensive review of each
applicant’s policies and programs.

A public comment period is now open. Comments on Mianus River Gorge Preserve’
s application will be most useful by
December 27, 2009. The Commission invites
public input and accepts signed, written comments on pending applications.

September, 2009: Journal Article on WTP Research published
Seth Aschen was a student in our class of '09 WTP program.  He studied
amphibian use areas that had been colonized by the invasive plant Japanese stilt
grass vs. nearby areas that have not been colonized.  Recently, MRGP staff
analyzed and prepared Seth's research in an article which has been published by
the Journal
Urban Habitats.  Click here to read the article.

April 13, 2009: WTP Student Katherine Caswell Gets 1st Place at State
JSHS
Katherine Caswell, a WTP student from Yorktown High School, won 1st place at
the NY State JSHS competition this month for her

luck to her at Penn State!

March 9, 2009: Citizen Science Owl Project Launched
We have started a new WTP citizen science project.  This time, Ossining HS
student Kyle Bardwell will coordinate backyard owl surveys performed by
residents of three counties.  These data will give us an idea of how four native owl
species use the suburban landscape across a tremendous area.

A website for this project has been launched.  You can find information on the
owls and the goals of the project, how to participate, and more.

We will also be offering training sessions for anyone interested in participating in
the project at local nature preserves.  Check the project site for details.
