Trails are now closed until April
Less than forty miles from Manhattan, the Mianus River Gorge Preserve (MRGP) is an oasis of rich woodland and old-growth forest one hour’s drive from New York City. The Preserve was established in 1953 to protect an old-growth hemlock forest and receives the special designation as the first Nature Conservancy land project and the first National Natural History Landmark designated by the US Department of the Interior. Today the Gorge manages over 1,000 acres in the Mianus Watershed.
The Gorge is a private 501(c)(3): we are not a state or town park, and we receive no public funding. We are completely supported by private donations from members of our community. Thank you for your consideration of a donation to help steward the Preserve.
The Preserve is open to the public from April 1 through November 30 from 8:30am to 5pm. We are closed for the winter when we allow our trails to rest and allow our limited staff to focus on our other priorities of research, education, and land protection.
The Gorge is open to hiking only. While we understand this can be an inconvenience, the rewards are many. Our hiking paths are narrow and winding, well kept, yet rugged. Visitors have the experience of a remote wilderness within an hour’s drive from one of the world’s largest cities. It is important that we impart this experience to all our visitors as well as maintain the Gorge in a natural state for scientific research and education.
Visitors to the Gorge enjoy over 5 miles of guided trails. Stop by our map shelter to learn about the delicate ecology and natural history of the Preserve, keep informed about our ongoing research and educational initiatives or obtain a special interest publication, a copy of our latest newsletter or a trail map. Restroom facilities as well as potable water are available near the Gorge entrance.
Please note that for your safety and to protect the integrity of our old-growth forest, power-driven mobility devices are not permitted on the hiking trails owned or managed by the Mianus River Gorge Preserve, Inc. Please click here to view MRGP Policy regarding power-driven mobility devices.
